"Bulky Waste" name has been changed to "Construction & Demolition / Oversized MSW"

This area is on top of the hill, away from the general day to day household trash and recyclables section.  

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 7:00 -3:00.  

Because of the growing shortage of landfill space, fees for dumping in this area will continue to rise and greater separation is imperative.  Please see the inspectors and follow their instructions carefully.  

Prices and Fees:

Fees are charges for items such as shingles, sheetrock, window glass, construction and demolition materials, fiberglass insulation, oversized furniture, rugs and similar material.  There are no fees assessed for metal without freon, cardboard, mattress/box springs and other recyclable materials.   Separate these materials to save yourself  and the District money.  Current disposal rates vary.  

BULKY WASTE
We have a separate transfer station for bulky waste which is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Because of the growing shortage of landfill space, fees for dumping of this waste will continue to rise and greater separation is imperative. FEES FOR BULKY WASTE DISPOSAL
Bulky waste fees are charged for items such as shingles, sheetrock, window glass, demolition materials, fiberglass insulation, oversize furniture and similar materials. There are NO fees for metal (unless it has freon), cardboard and other recyclable items. Separate these materials from your bulky waste to save yourself and the District money. Current disposal costs to the District are $80/ton. Clean asphalt shingles (free of metal, paper, wood and trash) may be disposed of at a significantly reduced rate.

SCRAP METAL
The District has an extensive separation program for scrap metal because all of it is recyclable. There are hoppers on either side of the garbage compactors (lower level) for small household items. Aluminum, copper, brass, lead and other valuable metals are separated, also electrical wire, cast iron and heavier steel. Please see the attendant for proper placement. There is a charge for appliances that have Freon. This charge is necessary to defray the cost of its extraction. There are no fees for other scrap metal dumping.

BRUSH, CLEAN WOOD & PALLETS
Brush, clean wood and pallets are separated and accumulated for grinding. The disposal of wood waste is costly to the District and therefore a fee is charged. If at all possible, we ask you to pile this material on your own land. It will biodegrade, with no harm to the environment and provide shelter for wildlife in the meantime. Clean wood means NO paint, stain, oil or other contaminants.

LARGE WOOD OR STUMPS
Large wood (6″ in dia. or larger) and stumps are accepted in the same manner, but separate from brush. A fee is also charged for this material.

CLEAN FILL
Items such as concrete rubble, brick, stone, dirt, sand, and ceramic pots should be separated. See the inspector for placement

Refrigerator’s cost $15

Dehumidifiers cost $20

TIRES

Due to market pricing, RRDD1 is forced to raise its rates for tire disposal.  

Passenger and light truck tires off rim are now $3.00 each.  An additional $1.00 fee is charged for each light tire on the rim. 

Truck tires begin at $10.00 off the rim and go up. 

Our scale will be used with quantity  at the rate of $275 per ton. 

SHINGLES

Clean shingles (free from metal, wood, paper, trash, etc) are $70 per ton

Dirty shingles (mixed with other debris) are $150 per ton.  Therefore, it is in your best interest  to make sure the shingles you deliver  to RRDD1 for disposal are clean of any debris.  

Safety First

When on RRDD1 property, signs are posted for your safety and convenience, and MUST be obeyed!

TRANSFER STATION LOCATION

The transfer station is located in Barkhamsted on Route 44 behind the Barkhamsted Public Works Garage (31 New Hartford Road).
